Obruni in Accra!

I've been in Accra for about 3 days now. There are so many things to write about, but I will save those for a later time. There is a long line waiting behind me for the dial-up internet inside the PC Accra Office.

Tomorrow we leave for the Vision Quest. We will each be traveling alone to the site of another PCV (Peace Corps Volunteer- again, full of acronyms). I will be heading out to Hiawa, which is in the Western Region. I will take a 5 hour tro-tro ride to Kumasi, and then another 4 hour tro-tro to the Hiawa area. I'll probably write a post just about what it is like to travel here. Tro-tros are crazy! Who knew that it wasn't necessary to have a full floor in the car- in Ghana you just need a nice steering wheel cover to have a nice ride.

Anyway, I'm really enjoying my time here. It's hot, my feet hurt, my arms are full of pokes, I have received countless marriage proposals, but it is awesome. Ghana is breathtaking. When I have some more time I will post a few more details and thoughts. After the VC I will be heading to Kukurantumi for the training. Once there I will be able to find a cell phone and hopefully some broadband! Miss you all! Cheers!

Sister, sister I miss your face so much...and I'm not there to protect you from hot African sun..you'll have to find some sort of shield. I love you and feel inspired by your selfless bravery. By the way its special sister day :)

Hi daughter, Miss you and it's just a week. Can't afford to send my care package. $352.00 for a small box ! I'll check out the postmaster but they don't guarantee it's arrival. Maybe all your friends can each send shampoo and soap ???
Love to you, Momma

Marriage proposals!!! My eyes are still tearing over this one...it's too rich.

Soooo...it has finally hit me that you're gone. Far, far, away. I'm really thrilled for you. Your tales have thus far been a light, a warmth, a thrill to read. Keep them coming, of course.

I really miss you a lot. I find myself being a bit tossed by your absence. I was up in Portland today to have my computer fixed at the Apple store: Portland, this land in general isn't the same without my best friend Megan away. But it's cool. You're doing what you need to be doin'. I'll get over it with time. Just want to impress upon you that you're loved by many. Marie...ah, yes...that's your middle name...

Cheerio darlink, for now....be well and be happy! xx

Megan,
Hello! I don't know if you'll remember me, but I used to be your Aunt Carrie!
A former student was looking for me under the name Carrie Lockwood (I am Carrie Newton now), and in trying to search for him, I stumbled upon your website!
I am SO PROUD of you! You were such a wonderful, energetic, and funny child, that this all doesn't surprise me in the least! :)
Good luck on your wonderful adventure! I am so excited you are going to go to Medical School also - you were ALWAYS very, very smart!
I have two daughters - Jocelyn and Madeline - who are about the same ages you and Megan were when Scott and I got divorced (10 and 8). They have often reminded me of you and Sam! I loved you two girls very much, and it is just so nice to hear that you are both doing so well! How is Sam? Say Hi to your Mom for me!
I took a couple of years off when my kids were little, and now I am teaching Kindergarten!
Take Care, and KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! I am VERY impressed! :)

Miss you Woo woo! I was so happy to hear your voice! Call me this weekend if you can! I can't afford international calls! But if you call me on weekend it will be free for me still, but if it is out going I will get charged. I will have to get a calling card to call you! I miss you! I can't wait to hear stories!

As for packages... USPS is the way to go. $36 for a flat rate box, or $4/lb for the media mail box!

As for phone calls... Skype is about 10 cents per minute to call once I get a phone. Also, you can get calling cards from phonecards.com or something like that for closer to 20-30 cents per minute. Much cheaper for you to call me. A 30 minute call from me to you is about 6 Ghana Cedis ($6)- which is 3 days pay!

Ginny, yes, Corey is in my group! He is very nice, we are having lots of fun together. He is running just about every morning.

Carrie, wow! I am so happy to hear from you! Of course I remember you! I am glad to hear you are doing well. Please keep in touch.
